Exploring Character AI alternatives?
Your stories. Yours to keep.

Looking for Character AI alternatives that let you keep your stories? Museris saves your characters and chats on your device, works without a Hub account, and lets you find an AI that tells the story your way.

Your stories deserve a future

A long-running roleplay becomes more than a chat window. It holds characters you have developed, relationships you have explored, and scenes you want to return to. As you explore Character AI alternatives, one of the most useful questions to ask is: will I still have my stories if the service disappears?

Museris stores your characters and conversation history on your device. You choose the AI that writes the replies, while your saved library stays with you. That gives your stories a future beyond any one hosted platform.

Character AI’s bankruptcy: what has been announced

Update, October 23, 2026: In its October 12 announcement, Character AI said it had initiated a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy process to pursue a court-supervised sale. It said the platform remained operational, but would wind down if no suitable bid allowed continued operation. A filing does not mean the service has already shut down. See the linked announcement for updates.

For anyone with months or years of conversations, that uncertainty is personal. Whatever happens next, having your own copy of the stories you care about means no one can take them away from you.

Keep your stories beyond a platform

A platform can close. Your local library stays.

With a hosted chat service, access to your stories depends on the company keeping the platform available. Even an app installed on your phone can still rely on remote servers for its chat history. An installed app and locally stored data are different things.

Museris keeps the core roleplay library on your device. A shutdown of the Museris Hub would not take that saved library away with it. Your existing installation can still open locally stored characters and conversations without signing in to the Hub.

That distinction matters even if you never run a model yourself. If your AI provider stops operating, your saved history stays in Museris. Choose another provider and keep writing. A new model brings its own take on your characters, while the story so far stays with you.

Local storage also puts backups in your hands. Keep copies of your library somewhere safe: a lost device, a damaged drive, or cleared app data can still erase the only copy you have. Keeping your stories means looking after those copies, too.

Find the voice your story deserves

Same cast. A whole new feel.

The model you choose has a huge effect on how a scene feels. It shapes the dialogue, the pacing, the descriptions, and the way your characters respond. One might lean into playful banter. Another might suit slow-burn romance, atmospheric prose, or a tense adventure.

With Character AI, you stay within its own chat experience. With Museris, you can use any AI provider and experiment with different models until you find a tone you love. Try the same opening scene with a few models. See which one captures your character’s wit, gives a quiet moment room to breathe, or sends the plot somewhere you want to follow.

You can change your AI without rebuilding your cast or moving your library. Keep a favorite for one story and try something different for the next. Your stories do not all have to sound alike.

There is room to shape the world around that voice, too. Add lorebooks, bring several characters into the same scene, and choose who you want to play. When you want more control, you can adjust the instructions that guide the AI’s writing.

Keep the writing on your computer, too

An online AI service receives the character details and conversation it needs to write a reply, even though Museris saves your chats on your device. You can also run the AI on your own computer for a more private setup. Our local AI roleplay guide explains how to get started and what hardware you need.

Moving from Character AI to Museris

Start by preserving what you already have, then build a setup you enjoy:

  1. Request your Character AI data export. Character AI’s official announcement confirms that exports are available through its app or website. Check that the downloaded copy contains what you want to keep.
  2. Save your own character material. Keep the definitions, opening messages, and world notes you created or have permission to reuse. You may not have access to another creator’s full character definition.
  3. Download Museris and choose your AI. Use an online provider to get started without running a model on your own computer.
  4. Create your characters or import supported cards. Museris supports standard PNG character cards. The character card guide explains how to write and refine a card.
  5. Find a voice you love. Try a few models with the same scene and see which writing draws you in. Back up your library as you go.

A Character AI account export is a backup, not a promise of direct chat migration into Museris. Do not assume it can be imported as a continuing conversation. Recreating a character with a different model also will not reproduce its behavior exactly. Keep the original export as a separate archive of your earlier stories.

Choosing between Character AI alternatives

Character AI’s hosted approach can suit people who want to open a service, find a character, and start chatting with minimal setup. Museris suits people who want their saved stories on their own device, a choice of AI providers, and more control over the cast and world.

You do not have to run a local model to benefit. Start with an online AI service if that fits your needs. Your characters and conversations still live on your device, and you can try running the AI yourself later.

The reason to choose Museris reaches beyond today’s news: you should be able to keep the stories you have spent time creating, even when the companies around them change.

Character AI alternatives: frequently asked questions

Can I use Museris without an account?

Yes. There is no sign up required to use the standalone Museris app. Install it, create your characters, and keep your conversations on your device. You do not need to sign in to the Hub to open your saved library. If you choose an online AI service for replies, that service may require its own account.

Can I use Museris for free AI roleplay?

Yes. Museris is fully free, and running a free local model on your own computer is free too. Together, they give you free AI roleplay with no subscription or per-message charges. Download the app, choose a local model, and keep your characters and stories on your device. If you prefer an online AI provider, that provider sets its own prices and limits.

Does Museris work offline?

You can open your locally saved characters and conversations offline. To generate new AI replies without an internet connection, you also need a model running on your own computer, set up and downloaded beforehand. An online AI service still needs internet access. Our local AI roleplay guide walks through the options.

Are there Character AI alternatives that keep my chats on my device?

Yes. Museris stores your characters and conversation history on your device, even when you use an online AI service for replies. That service receives the story context it needs to respond, so local storage and fully offline roleplay are different things. Choose a model running on your own computer if you want the writing to stay there too.

Can I keep my AI roleplay private?

Yes. Use a local model to keep both your saved stories and the writing of new replies on your own computer. Your character details and conversations do not need to go to an online AI provider. It is a much more private way to explore stories you want to keep to yourself.

If you prefer an online model, a zero-logs provider can offer better privacy by processing your conversations without retaining their contents. Your story context still goes to that provider to generate replies, so check that its no-retention policy applies to the model and settings you choose. Museris keeps your saved library on your device either way.

Would I lose my stories if the Museris Hub shut down?

Your existing installation can still open your locally saved library without the Hub. A Hub shutdown would not take those saved characters and conversations with it. Keep backups so a lost device or cleared app data does not erase your only copy. New replies still need an available AI service or a model running on your own computer.

Can I try different AI models without starting over?

Yes. Keep your cast and saved story, then try another model to see how it changes the dialogue, pacing, and mood. You can use any AI provider or run a model yourself. Each model brings its own voice, so experiment until you find the tone you want.
